I wrote a commissioned piece for Medium’s old ad-supported creative exchange, and I’m not at this point a “partner,” but it’s frustrating to see Medium flail about, looking for a sustainable revenue model using strategies that it’s already clear bias media and result in a tragedy of the commons.
All this while the blockchain is right under their noses. Cryptotokens could be distributed within the network not only to writers, but also to people who help writers’ work spread. These tokens could have value in that they represent the value of the network, and could be used for influence within the network.
This isn’t a new idea. I’m already earning money this way on a network called Steemit. I wrote about it here:
I’m not saying this model will work for sure. Nobody knows. But it’s at least fitting for the bold mission Medium has of fixing how media is shaped by economic incentives.
