The new Netflix “logo” is both red carpet and theater curtain
Netflix has a new icon today:

Notice that it’s like a red carpet. It wraps around you the way red curtains in a theater might.
This goes along well with what is currently their logo:

Notice the Netflix logo also “wraps” around you (by virtue of the rounded baseline upon which the letters sit) the way theater curtains would.
This is a nice combo, but I predict that there will be a new logo (rather than “icon”) forthcoming.
Notice that this is a progression from the ubiquitous “flat” design style, wherein geometric shapes are made slightly dimensional with gradients.
This was first seen recently with the iOS 7 redesign:

Historically, this is similar to the poster design work of A.M. Cassandre.

Expect to see more design in this style in the coming years.
